Strip gradient into 2 layers, solid color and shadow.

Last Modified: 2012-05-10
I have an image of a web 2.0 button and I need to be able to have the button color changed with CSS and JS.  I wish to do this by having the button be a transparent .png of shadows and have a different background color behind it on the page.

I want to take the button (.jpg) and strip out the shadowing onto a separate layer from the button color.

I am using adobe photoshop Elements 4.0.  (archaic, I know.)

Is there any way to get the shadow gradient in just black/grey transparency on a separate layer?
