Mac OS X 10.5.8 Freezes randomly

Hey there,

I'm having an issue with a PowerMac G4. It is freezing randomly and I just can't figure it out!

When it freezes, the system fully locks up. I.e. No spinning beach ball. The mouse won't move, the keyboard won't work, and the clock stops ticking.

The system is basically a fresh install of Mac OS X with a new hard drive. I've used tech tool pro's boot CD to run a full diagnostic test. All hardware comes back SOLID.

I'm attaching two different system log files of the time it happened. One time was 8:33:05
The other was 8:20:58

I included from when the computer initially started up, to 5 minutes or so AFTER it was shut down and rebooted.

I'm wondering about the USB lines the occur every 5 seconds. If I unplug the USB hub, these errors STOP. I tried replacing the USB hub but the errors and freezing both continue.

I'm stumped...I know I must be missing something but I'm pretty confident it's NOT software related, since it's a fresh install. I'm also pretty certain it's NOT hardware related on PowerMac itself. (It could be with a peripheral?)

Thanks for any advice you can offer!!!

Another issue to consider is  the  hub isn't providing enough voltage for a device plugged in the hub.

Hey there --

Thanks for the update. I DID have my Mouse placed in the hub. Just for testing purposes, I've removed the hub entirely. Will run a week to see how things flow.

The only other device I had plugged in was a card reader...
....To be honest I think you're probably right. Give it a week and I'll award you your points :)

Hey there,

Thanks for the advice. It is a powered hub, and we've always used it with the hub connected to the power, as I'm aware this can cause issues.

Oddly enough, the system has actually gone a full week before without a single issue.

Strange Eh?
the other issue which I'm sure that you have considered is a specific USB peripheral that has gone bad. Reader, Scanner, Printer, etc. Intermittent problems really add to the challenge.

Had one recently, where my client bought a brand new scanner. Started getting problems with his USB and tried replacing the hub figuring the scanner was fine because it was new. Of course, it was the scanner. GL
