proxy server is refusing connection

in safe mode w/networking in vista, the error msg in FF is "The proxy server is refusing connection". The wirless connection is on in the laptop. This is not on any domain, just straight connection to the wireless router.

what is the issue, and how to make FF back in operation?

Go Tools > Settings > Advanced > Network > Settings

and use the 'No Proxy' setting.

If you require to use a proxy, make sure it's working before selecting it.

Should the issue continue, make sure you are not running any add-on that provides proxy usage for your Firefox.
If you are uncertain, start Firefox in safe mode without add-ons: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/safe+mode

Thanks torimar. It was set to 'System settings'; I changed it to default, and it worked.

It must have tripped as it worked before this just fine. what kind of things may trigger this?

Not sure.
If you did do nothing yourself, you must have installed, updated or reconfigured some application or plugin that either changed these FF settings, or changed the working system settings in a way that they no longer work well for FF.

Questions like this most often remain unsolved mysteries. But I found that in the few cases where I actually managed to pinpoint the cause of changes, it was always something that I had done or tried to do and then forgotten about.
