Items in Hijack This labled as "no file" or "file missing"
This isn't a current problem of mine, but I do have a question: occasionally I wll come across a computer that displays "no file" or "file missing" on items / services that are needed to run Windows. I don't check those and delete them, but wonder if there is a cause for this? After cleaning up a machine of a virus or malware, sometimes these status messages in Hijack This will go away.
Thank you, in advance, for the answer to this question.

I need to clarify: the items I am talking about are important Windows services... while they are listed as missing in HiJack This, I can find them in the c:\windows; c:\windows\system32 folders with no trouble. After a reboot, the status of "missing will sometimes go away... if not, the services still load and are not really "missing." This is not on a particular machine: I have worked on over 2,000 machines with Hijack this in the past and only see this in about 40% of infected computers I come across... this is more of a curiosity as the symptom does not cause operational issues.

If it's not a case of 64bit, can you show us a log file?
Hijackthis version 1.99 had a bug that reports services as having "file missing" when they are not.

If you're talking about malware services, then Hijackthis would report them as having file missing but the files should really be gone, which the system could also shoot out an "error loading file" at bootup.

Right on-- you are correct... it only affected Windows Vista and 7 64 bit versions... thanks!

1 - Startup folder
2 - go to run, type msconfig and go to the startup programs and remove the missing file item
3 - you can go the regedit and find run or run once and remove the command missing the file
