VMware converter failure: error code 1618

I have been using VMware converter to do P2V conversions on a couple Windows 2000 servers. My first server converted nicely however my second server fails when trying to install the remote agent with an error code of 1618.

I have reviewed multiple troubleshooting documents and believe I have isolated the problem to a port on my second server (9089) not "listening"...this port on the first server is "listening"

How do I get port 9089 on the second server set so it is "listening"?

Not sure, but you can scan the ports to see which one is listening and then I found this suggestion to change the port that vmware converter uses with this command line. (type it all on one line) This changes it to use port 8071.
VMware-Converter-Agent.exe /s /v"AGENT_PORT=8071 /l*v %TEMP%/vmconvagentmsi.log /qn"

Have you checked the Converter logs for more specifics?

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Converter Enterprise\Logs

Open the logs with notepad, and paste here.

You can install the Agent manually, if you cannot do it remotely.

or, if all else fails you can use coldclone.iso, if you can shutdown this server.

@ hanccocka - this log is from the last attempt I made at installing the remote converter agent on the server...I copied all transactions that occurred at 11:27 which is when I last attempted it.

When you start the remote installation, do you see msi files in the \windows\temp directory, copy these msi files, and manually install the convertor, does it fail with an MSI error?

there will also be an MSI log, 1618 is an MSI log error.

OK..something interesting...I tried to do an install of the vmware-converter-agent.exe file directly on the server in question. As I went through the installation, when it got to the point where it actually began installing, there was an error (Error 1500. Another installation is in progress, you must complete that installation before continuing)...so I restarted my server to clear any installations and retried to install only to get the exact same message.

So, I pulled up task manager and watched processes when I started the installation...when I start the installation task manager shows the VMware-Converter-Agent process under "image name"...but also two "msiexec.exe" processes also startup at the same time...is this normal?

two msiexec.exe could be normal for the package.

Can you install any other software (MSI packages) using Windows Installer, I wonder?

There's no anti-virus product installed?

I've had issues with old Win2k server not installing the VMware-Converter-Agent, and I reverted to shutting down the server (out of hours, if possible) and booting the server from the coldclone.iso cdrom, and converting that way.

or you could try Vizioncore vConverter for free! (trial migrations).

or there's always the old way, P2V manually. (I used this all the time before VMware-Converter), and still use today.

I will try the Vizioncore vConverter...what is the "P2V manual method"?
Commented:
After seeing I had problems installing the vConverter locally and having problems, I tried to install the Vizioncore vConverter and experienced the exact same installation issues...only this time, the Vizioncore vConverter program puts out a nice log file.

When I examined the log file, I noticed some issues with .NET authorizations?...so I decided to do the old Windows update from Internet Explorer...there were indeed some .NET updates that were suggested so I updated my server completely with the necessary updates and wouldn't you know it, when I tried my VMware vConverter standalone installation from my remote server, everything now works perfectly.
