Joomla Latest news module with selective articles

I need to find a module that functions like the a test news module but allows to choose or eliminate selective articles. News Highlighter GK1 by Gavick has this functionality, but appears limited to only a horizontal scrolling along one line.  I need to be able to have the headlines  in a module in the left region, the headlines in a list as links to the articles, all coming from one specific category. and, as stated before, have the ability to select the specific articles' headlines to be displayed.

Any help is appreciated.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The simple way to acheive this is create a custom category and just assign the articles you want to it when u need them and once you dont require them as news just assign them to a secondary news category

Storm

Will take the same time as doing this with a special module, as youll still have to assign the articles for that

Thanks for your response! But I think I wasn't clear enough.

The headlines will be appearing on the home page. Clicking on them takes the user to a specific blog style page based on category. having two news categories doesn't appear to me to work as the client's requirement is to selectively show only certain article headlines on the home page, yet, all the articles need to appear in the "News" section.

Along with choices for section and category,The GK1 by Gavick allows in their module for choosing article id but the module is restricted to a horizontal one line scrolling or animated display.

Thanks for your feedback and your patience. I hope this makes the requirements clearer.

Ah yeah when its for a client its different matter.

I would say open up the gavik module code and remove the scroller code

it will be pretty obvious as i reckon it will use javascript to do so

If  get time ill rip it apart for you to make it eassie can you post the module code for the version you are using and ill reply to that saves me doing it on a version which your not using

Thanks for the feedback - sorry I've been out of touch. I looked into possibly re-coding either one for the other module. In the Case of the GK News Highlighter, It's a pretty complex module and it seems the Horizontal is somewhere in the template and the css - but the coding is beyond me to figure out quickly.

The easier fix it would appear is to re-vise the code of the Latest News module that comes with the basic Joomla install. I thought it might be easier to add a field to the database, add a filed for variable article id ($artid) and then proceed with changing the code ear where the exiting Section and Category variables are. Unfortunate;y I don't have that figured out either.  am having trouble understanding the SELECT code and cannot find code for an Insert or Update.

Thanks for the offer to help rip it apart. I don't want to impose on your time, but can appreciate any help you have to offer.

I found there was an existing extension that does what I wanted:
It's called the Joomla Featured Articles Module

The responses by the contributor were helpful in making me explore the problem but did not offer a complete solution to the issue as I described it. Once I updated my response I did not hear from them again. In the meantime I found an accurate solution on the web.
