substring in crystal reports 2008 formulas

hi

i want only the 3 first characters in my report , i use formulas but have an error
i have this
for this field
BCCDAHFFD
left({P1011.codigo},1,3)
the result i need
is BCC

What's the error?  Is {P1011.codigo} a string?
