Pirnting from Mac OS to Windows 2008 Shared Printer

I have a director that needs to print from a MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.6.4, to a printer that is shared from a Windows 2008 R2 server. Windows XP/7 clients can print to this printer fine, however, I've never used a Mac before, so don't know the procedure for adding a printer.

I've tried System Prefs > Printers > pressing the '+' sign to add, and a list of printers is displayed. However, the specific printer required is not on the list!

Printer is a Lanier printer, connected to the Windows 2008 server as an IP port, running Lanier's universal print driver.

I have the same setup at my company. We have some users that have macs and all of our printers are running on windows server 2008 r2 as a print server. All of our mac users have direct connections to the statis IP address of the printer instead of running through the print server. In order to get it to work, you should try to add the printer manually instead of looking for it from a list. You should be able to specifically add an IP address for the printer and then the mac will query the printer to find what driver is needed. If it is not able to find the driver it will give you the option to select one manually. I would suggest to go on the Lanier website and download the correct software driver for mac.

http://www.lanier.com/downloads/Default.aspx?hbn=drivers

Once you do that, the install file might have an option to allow you to set up a networked printer directly by entering the exact ip address of the printer. If it does not allow you to do it that way, you should be able to extract the driver to a location that you can then access when the laptop is asking you for the driver location. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply.

Can you explain how to add a printer manually? I couldn't see the option under the System Preferances > Printers > Add Printer (+ button) it only seems to allow you to select a printer from the list, I couldn't see anywhere where you could enter an IP address for a direct connection.
1. Are you running a 2008 active directory?
2. Is the macintosh bound to this directory?
If you can answer 1. and 2. above the you should see the printer listed in windows printing from the mac printer add options.

If not, then you should see if the printer supports bonjour networking.. ..is the mac on same subnet as the printer?

Adding a printer manually to a mac when it is also being managed by a windows print server can cause conflicts with print jobs in certain configurations - take care if doing this.  I'd work on 1 and 2...
Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

We are running 2008 AD, however this MAC is not a member, it's one of the directors personal laptops, that he brings in. The MacBook is on the same subnet, and I believe the printer supports Bonjour. If you look in the list, it shows 2 other Lanier printers, and has Bonjour listed next to them. However, it doesn't show the printer he wants to print to!

I'll see if we can tempt the director into binding his MacBook with the domain, and see if that helps!
If the other two printers are showing up under bonjour, did someone turn it on for those two, or did someone maybe turn it off on the one you need to print to?  We sometimes turn other protocols off to save on network traffic.

If you need instructions on adding the computer into the AD then post back and I will point you in the direction of instructions available online.
