Gmail contacts missing

Gmail says that I have 0 contacts. I had 534 contacts an hour ago, didn't use Gmail during that time, and when I went back - every contact was gone. I went through every folder and subset that Gmail offers, checked every link, and still - nothing. WHERE could these contacts have gone? How can I get them back?

A few technical details:

OS: Mac OSX 10.5.8
Browser: Safari (5.0)

I will be out of town for a couple days, but will check in when I can.
Thank you! Thank you!

When I begin to type an address that I know in the To: box of an email, the list of emails shows up - but I can't access the information that I store behind the email (phone number, etc)? That means they are still there (thank goodness), but I can't get to them.....
