How to create post for Ask Reddit?

I haven't been able to figure out how to post my question to Reddit. (It is a health question).

Meaning: http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/

It says "You are able to post self-posts only!" How does one do that?

Instead of posting in ask.reddit you need to post in self.self until you build up your posting Karma?

Self is a reddit area just like ask.reddit is, so I am guessing that this is where new users build up Karma.

Everywhere I go, my only choices are "Submit a link" or "Create your own Reddit." A couple years ago I posted a few things, but nothing since.

I tried to start with "Create your own Reddit" and it was deleted automatically immediately. No idea why. No links, no spammy phrases that I could see,

Okay, now I'm trying "Submit a link" (though I have no link to submit) and it seems to be the way to go. Will report back :)

Looks like "Submit a link" also means "Submit text"--it was successful
