Hi,

I have search the forums about this but have not found this specific problem wit the MIgration Tool, forgive me if I have missed any threads about it.

I have a problem when running the Windows Small Business Server 2008 Migration Preparation Tool. The first an last "jobs" runs fine and I get a green check mark. The one in the middle called Provide LIcensing Support fails.

The log I saw yesterday (SourceTool.log) but is gone today (???) states on my print out of it:

08/19/2010 16:28:37      Starting task Provide licensing support
08/19/2010 16:28:37         Current version: 5.2.3790.131072
08/19/2010 16:28:37         Running C:\Program\Windows Small Business Server 2008 Migration Preparation Tool\KB943494\WindowsServer2003-KB943494-x86-ENU.exe /quiet /norestart
08/19/2010 16:28:47         Package returned: 1603 (0x643)
08/19/2010 16:28:47         Task finished with Error

It's a SBS2003 in Swedish and a SBS2008 in English. So I figured it could be something with the language and I have tried to download it (KB943494 in Swedish) manually and ran it without any problems, but when SBS2008 checks if the minimum requirements are met on the source server it says I must run the Windows Small Business Server 2008 Migration Preparation Tool to extend the shutdown period to 21 days.

Then I tried to replace the WindowsServer2003-KB943494-x86-ENU.exe with renaming the Swedish equivalent and running the Tool again, no difference... :(

I actually found a logfile from running the KB943494 (stand alone) and there it seems like some problems occured.

You will have 7 days to migrate if you cant get this hot fix to work, then the other server will shut down, if you can do your migration in that time, dont worry about the hotfix, the work around if you cant get it installed is get yourself a copy of http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx and suspend (not kill) the SBSCREXE.EXE service. This will stop the 2003 box shutting down on you and give you as much time as you want to migrate (ELUA states only 21 days tho so legaly stick to that)

Hope this helps :)

Well... That may have workes as far as supending the service...
The Migration Wizard however is still refusing to let me continue due due to the fact that it says the source server isn't ready and may shut down earlier than in 21 days.
Sooo... I'm stuck again.

Any other ideas?

That wont stop the migration (or shouldn't.. I installed a server about a year ago and it started to shut down after 7 days, the patch hadn't installed)

Could you post the screen shot of the server? saying it cant continue?

Cheers

I had one of the girls use her mobile to take a pic of the screen as I have left for the day. :)
Hope you can read it...

Forgot to mention that I found evidence in the Registry that KB943494 is installed. However, the Swedish KB943494 is called KB943494-v4. So... I tried to rename it to KB943494 but it didn't make any difference... is there any other way to try to fool the sbs2008?
Or is there a "How to" out there for manual migration? I have searched but not found anything useful yet.

Its not the 21 day thing thats stopping you, this is just a warning you can ignore. The "run the migration prep tool" is what is stopping you right now. What you can do, is get the folder from the DVD called Tools (I think) and run the AD Prep in there, that should get you ready. (I Dont have my SBS2008 disks at home)

Oh, but I have runned (is that proper english? :)) the Prep Tool on the SBS2003 numerous times... And it still says that Licensing failed - then the 2008 says run the preptool... I have also used ADPREP for domain and forest, should I do this again?
Or is it a Catch 22?...

This was "solved" by starting all over again and creating a new domain and then making the clients part of the new domain.
