I am having some 50 servers in my farm all running exnapp 4.5 with fp1 hfrp06. we use scom for monitoring the servers and scom reports one of the server everyday where ima service is failing. in the morning when i verify i see that the service is running. I increased the servicecontrolmanager time from the default 6 minutes to 10 minutes. still no luck. any idea as to what may be causing this. it happens only on one server

Have you tried to recreate the LHCACHE to see if this would help clear it up? I have had issues where the console will report a server as down, but its not... clearing the lhcaache seems to clear that up.

command line: ( I will disable logins prior so users are not hitting the server in the middle of me doing this )

net stop imaservice
dsmaint recreatelhc
netstart imaservice (or reboot if you can)
