Our Exchange 2007 goes down intermittantly. Sometimes a  reboot does not resolve.  Services are still running. Mail does not go in or out (internal and external). It seems that Exchange fixes itself at some point.  It has happened over the last 2 weeks about 4 times that we realized.  I see these messages in event log.

Add the IP Addresses of your ISP's DNS servers to the Forwarders tab of the Small Business Server DNS settings and then you should be fine.
I have seen this time and time again and this is what worked for me on my customers servers.

I added the router address in my ns records in dns forward zone because the router has the 2 isp static entries.  2008 says I can't add them directly since they are not validating as secure.

I am not talking about NS zones.

Open up DNS on your server (Start, Administrative Tools, DNS) then right-click on your server and choose properties.  Click on the Forwarders tab and add either ISP's DNS IP addresses to the Forwarders tab.

I forgot to put since DHCP only hands out the server as the dns server, we never loose internet just exchange.

Okay - are you running low on disk space on any volumes (less than 4gb)?  You may be suffering from Backpressure!

Nope only 1 volume with 26 gigs free on server.  The only other volume is the USB drive that 2008 backs up too.

You are less than 25% free space, which is usually when backpressure kicks in.

The Back Pressure settings are found in a single file called EdgeTransport.exe.config

This file is located in the "bin" subdirectory  of the Exchange Server 2007 installation directory.

Open the file with notepad and check the settings.  If you set the "enableresourcemonitoring" value to false, then save the file, restart the Edge Transport service, does mail-flow return?

Oh.  Sorry.  You should have been able to just stop the Edge Transport service, but not to worry.

Waiting for the restart and your next feedback.

everything came back up fine but email was working before I made that config change. Will have to wait until tomorrow when the office returns and starts to abuse exchange more.

Sure - I was kind of expecting it all to be working after a reboot.
Give it some time - monitor it and see if the problems re-surface.  If not then you know you are having backpressure issues.  The question is - what to do?
You either need to clear up some space, add some more disk space, add another set of disks and move the exchange store to the new disks, get tidying up on the server or change the threshholds.
