Cisco voice gateway ISDN BRI card problem connecting to UK tele company
Dear Experts,
We are in the process of moving a remote office to a new premises, replacing the PBX system with a Cisco router with an ISDN BRI card, with the intention of connecting to a Call Manager at HQ. However, we have problems with the new ISDN card it seems, after BT visited to confirm the ISDN line could make and receive calls with the correct phone number, using their testing handset.
It appears the ISDN card may be faulty, but I cannot be sure. I have posted sone of the config of the ports, plus the debug log of "debug isdn standard". The layer 2 link to BT's switch goes up and down as soon as the TEI is accepted.

The router and ISDN card are brand new and untested, but it could also be misconfigured. Please let me know your opinions.
Thank you in advance!

Thank you for your reply - I spoke to the hardware supplier last night, and they believed the ISDN card was faulty. I will try your solution also today and let you know/

I have applied your suggestions to the config but unfortunately the problem remains. The ISDN card has just been replaced also, so that is also now effectively eliminated.
There have been a few engineers making changes to the config now, but without having an effect. The support company added these lines:
network-clock-select 1 BRI0/0/0
network-clock-select 2 BRI0/0/1
I do not know what effect these would have - are they on the right lines? Just before adding the lines this morning, we noticed that Layer 1 was down completely, and suspect the telco was t-shooting at the exchange. A few minutes later we then had LAyer 1 and Layer 2 up, and not flapping. However, we still could not make a call. The support engineer believes our dial-peers are not matching, but I am sceptical as I did manage to make a "split-second" call to my mobile phone last week, using the dial peers. The engineer wants me to copy dial peers from another of his customer's routers, but I am loathe to. I will try to get a new debug trace and post it today.

Hi,
Network clock statements are fine. They are there just to get your BRI oscillator synch up with the service provider's clock. That mainly affects the fax call success rate.
Provide the following debugs
debug isdn q931
debug voip dial-peer inout
Also the commands
show dial-peer voice summary
show inventory

Alex

It looks as though the layer 2 flapping has returned. I just made a test call from an analogue phone on the FXS port. Please have a look at the debug below. I have sanitised the called number.
It has just been discovered that no "caller-id" has been put on the ISDN circuit - could this be a factor? Will the telco not like the "1234" calling number ID perhaps? Even so, Layer 2 failure is an extreme response to it!

it looks as though we posted at the same time - I will get the info you just asked for.
ASKER
Please see the outputs below. Again I have sanitised the key mobile phone number - you can at least see that it matches the dial peer and attempts to dial I think. A contact at our support partner has just emailed to say that the telco are testing the ISDN line and have now said they cannot restore ISDN service! Totally confusing but perhaps they had the fault at their end the entire time? I will post the outputs anyway, in case they come back and say it is our equipment.

The carrier agreed that there was a fault on Friday - strange as they said it was fine previously! The telco engineer said the circuit was not accepting data or speech when he tested it. He called at the end of Friday to say the fault was fixed, but it is still the same from my point of view. Layer 2 still bouncing.
I guess it could be the wiring? I changed the patch leads once at the beginning of the process, but changed them back when it made no difference. I am using Cat 5e UTP. It has worked in other situations! The engineers who visited the site initially used a testing tool attached to the ISDN box in the office, so I presume the wiring is OK to that point.
I will get an update tomorrow from the telco. thanks for your advice.

Thank you for all your help on this. It was fixed eventually by the carrier and by us. The carrier replaced exchange equipment, and then we had to shut down (or unplug) one of our cables. We were apparently only given one line, and the second line being used was also causing a fault!
Ah, I like to receive the points because in my last message, I said "Your configurations are fine. Your carrier needs to fix the issue, unless you have a problem with wiring in the building."
The author confirmed the problem was fixed "It was fixed eventually by the carrier and by us. The carrier replaced exchange equipment, and then we had to shut down (or unplug) one of our cables."
My answer was spot on! I believe I deserve the points.
Cheers!

That's right - I did award you all the points, spread over 2 responses. Sorry if that didn't appear in the information you received.
ASKER
there appears to be a problem accepting multiple solutions - I will accept one instead.
Thanks!
If it doesn't fix the issue remove the 2 lines under voice port
Also add the following to voice port
