Netboot "Client not currently booted"
New to the who DeployStudio thing. Read all the docs, ready to go. Getting haulted by this one issue and Im sure its user error. On my Macbook I went to startup options, selected the deploystudio startup disk so it will netboot. It restarts and just goes to a login screen as if it did nothing different. The sever in the Netboot are of Server Admin detects the client in the "Clients" section but it just says "Client not currently booted".
Am I missing something?
Did I not do something right?
Arnt there 2 way to boot to a network? One being selecting a startup disk, and the other pressing N when the computer boots up?

as for your original question yes, pressing 'N' on bootup or selecting the startup disk have the same effect... both should allow booting, but your issue suggests something a little more server side.
Have a look through my post above and tell me what you have done so far in terms of setting up netboot and deploy studio.

Just to confirm I was able to ping the client from the server
Ok .. and what about the other stuff. Is your netboot server configured with at least one image for the arch (PPC or Intel or universal ) of the laptop youre trying to boot ? is it enabled in the netboot server options and set as the default for the platform ?
Take a screenshot of the images screen of the netboot configuration screen.
Also - im assuming the server only has one NIC ? is netboot enabled on the correct interface that the laptop is ?
I cant see anything in the netboot log indicating that a client is connecting and working.. so its suggesting something is wrong. DOuble check the NIC that netboot is enabled on, and the client is connecting to the right one ?
Is it the same LAN ? or is there a router connecting them ? have you got ip-helpers configured if its a routed network?

and im assuming that if you boot with N held down, the same happens, it boots as normal and ignores the deploystudio ?

So I saw this and think this might be my problem, noticed that AFP is not running for netbook mac os x, I cant figure out why its not or how to start it

Nah, deploystudio works as a netinstall set not a netboot set so your status LED's are fine. Can you confirm if the system boots holding 'N' at startup ? or is the result the same as selecting the startup disk as netboot ?
ASKER
its the same result both ways
Have you tried booting any other devices, or do you only have one to test ? Also when you try and boot, do you get the 'planet' symbol at all ? or does it boot right to your installed OS ?

I get the planet, it blinks 3 times then I get the apple and it boots normal. I can try another computer. Wil do now

so on a unrelated note I unbound the machine from AD and rebound it and guess what???? It works OMG!! I got the deploystudio runtime screen. Have not seen that screen yet. Keep checking back on this post Im sure I will post more
It started blinking the globe then I saw the apple with another globe I think under it. Then it stated deploy studio just after I wrote the last comment

Yep thats the first part working then, the next thing that should happen is a login screen (if you selected that to happen) and then a screen with your workflows 'create master from volume' etc etc
ASKER
Ok so I boot to net boot now but now I keep getting an unknown host error?
At which point do you get that error?
ASKER
It's right at the first screen where it says deploystudio runtime.

Ok - no worries :) just let me know how you get on, deploystudio is something of a hobby of mine recently :)

Wow not sure what happened but my AD box got JACKED!!!! IIS was missing, DNS was missing and I was not able to rebuild it. Thank goodness I had a backup from 3 days ago. Wow I think I am going to not bind the mac server which is what I wanted to do in the first place and keep them seperatly, I can use SMB to file share to our file server. Now I need to figure out how to share it out to the clients :)
I was sweating bad for a sec

at the end I was having DNS problems that caused my issues. Make sure DNS is PERFECT ALWAYS!!!!! :)
1) Netboot configured on the machine your using as your netboot & deploystudio server
2) A deploystudio server up and running on the machine, complete with shares configured for the master images
3) At least one (either intel, universal or PCC) deplystudio netboot set, thats in the netboot folder and marked as active (netboot config options in server manager).
the fact that the mac book isnt booting suggests that either netboot isnt configured correctly, or the deploystudio netboot set hasn't been enabled, configured as default, or the right architecture for the client its trying to boot.
Best thing to do is enable logging to the highest level on the netboot server and check if its seeing any traffic from the client. That should be a good starting point.
