I was in the exact same boat as you. I followed all the articles that I could get my hands on and still no joy. Please read the article as suggested above as this gives some wonderful steps.

An addition to this, do the following:

On the Exchange server, open IIS.
Go to the default website and right click onto the Exchange virtual directory and choose Properties
Click on the Directory Security tab and click edit under the access control section
Make sure integrated and basic authentication is selected.

Then configure your iPad settings. I disregarded the cannot verify certificate boxes by selected accept. Then I ran the mail app and the mail came flooding in. So too the contacts and calendar.

If you have Outlook Web Access configured, you will have IIS. Also, if you make any changes in IIS, you will need to restart IIS. To do this: START - RUN - IISRESET

I am not sure what version of Exchange you have, but if you have 2003, do this:

Open Exchange System Manager
Expand GLOABL SETTINGS
Right mouse click on MOBILE SERVICES and select properties
Under the Outlook Mobile Settings section, make sure both items are ticked
OK out of there

This change may take a couple minutes to take effect.
