trying to installe windows update on server 2008 64-bit and it fails with error code 8000FFFF

have you checked the Event Viewer for any specific messages? Do the following.. What Update are you trying to install? Look for Update KB929777 and do the following...

Go to Control Panel(classic view), Windows Update, Review Update
History,click on installed updates(blue text at the top), Find (KB929777),
right click and uninstall it. Reboot the computer.

I ended up re-installing windows 2008 (32-bit) has problems with all the 64-bit versions on HP Servers
