Custom File Attributes or Tags

I have ran across a couple projects and code samples online regarding adding custom attributes or tags to files using the Dsofile.dll
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q224/3/51.ASP&NoWebContent=1

My goal is to be able to Tag or add attributes to files that where uploaded to a web based application so that a Search tool can read these and index them. I am fine if there is only 1 tag I can write to and I am not sure exactly what is possible yet.

The web based application is written in c# and basically we want to add some tags when the file is uploaded as well as some custom ones.

If you have any questions fee free to ask but please no Google search results.

One option we still have open is to add these tags to our own database and reference them to the files, but I was hoping for something that was built into the file system structure, already similar to what you can do with pictures and music files, but on any file.

Dsofile.dll will only be able to "handle" Office files (or more specifically files that have the OLE Structured Storage format).
If you want to tag all files that could be uploaded to your web application, this will not do the job.

That said, your remaining option would be to use your own database.
