.rdl keeps opening in xml

i dont understand....but my .rdl file keeps opening in xml....i've tried:

opening the project then opening file(same result)
opening the project then adding exiting item
creating new project then opening the ifle
creating new project then adding existing item

this is sooo frustrating...

why does MS make this sooo  complicated?

The answer is quite simple.  It is Xml.
