As the title says are there any alternatives to the hosted GFI solution for monitoring a large number of servers to check things like backups complete/services are running/antivirus is up to date on several networks?

I'm not familiar with GFI, but I've used several solutions over the years that match your requirements. One that I like allot is called Kaseya.  In addition to some of the features you asked about, I particularly like the alert, and scripting options they provide. You can remotely run scripts to add printers, remove software or files, etc with ease. Check them out at http://kaseya.com/ and let me know what you think.

It doesnt look quite as user friendly as the gfi product as you seem to have to program your own scripts rather than picking them off a list.  Nice bit of software though so thanks for letting me know about it

The scripts are template, so you just fill in the blanks. It also has a good WSUS and anti-virus solution that I did not mention.
