Can someone help me with a solution for importing data into Joomla. More specifically data of XLS/CSV files. My task is to create a company intranet ,  a inventory database contraining xls, csv files. Having used Sharepoint 3.0 in the past we were able to create sortable tables with custom headers. My task is to recreate something similar using Joomla as a backbone. If such a solution exists I'd also need a custom search of some kind (search specific inventories/search all, search part of the word, search exact), ability to display results in different tabs or same page sorrted via inventory names.

Once again Im not looking for anyone to code the solution for me or do I expect an extension that will take care of all this tasks.  Some discussion and tips would be nice.  I kinda expect that I'm do a hack job on some existing scripts.

Mmm I'm not sure that there is anything out there that will just allow that.

I am assuming you have already searched http://extensions.joomla.org for something like that?

I would probably code my own component for this.

Check out the Joomla MVC model http://docs.joomla.org/Developing_a_Model-View-Controller_Component_-_Part_1 which will give you some background on how to build a component. When I first went through this it took about a day to get my head around it and get my component fully built so it doesn't take that long.

You will want to just provide a form with a file upload box that allows the xls/cvs file and then use a process file to extract the info you require and insert that into some custom database tables. From there it should be fairly easy to generate a frontend grid with this data.
