MS SQL Mirroring - connection breaks and will not reconnect

I have two SQL Server 2005 servers connected via a VPN configured for database mirroring. Last night, the backup server last power and restarted. When it came back up, it said that it was disconnected from its Partner. I tried restarting the SQL service on the backup server to no avail. I know that I can copy the database over and restart mirroring from scratch, but shouldn't the two servers automatically resynchronize? It would be an enormous problem if I had to restart mirroring every time that there was a VPN interruption or a power problem.

I just restarted the service on the backup server one more time and mirroring restarted, but shouldn't this happen automatically anyway?

Also, is there a way for me to be notified if mirroring fails so I can take action on this immediately?
And it just said disconnected again seconds after restarting.
