JavaRanch is a good resource for the different certifications; play, research, play some more (i.e., learn by doing).

In my humble opinion, having a 'certification' doesn't make you do well at a job or even get it in the first place. What it does is prove to and others you are knowledgeable in a specific area. This 'street credit' can indeed sort your resume to top of pile and otherwise qualify you for a position, but they still have to like your resume and interview. Now the confidence it gives you will shine through on said interview so that too has value and will aid you in being comfortable you can handle the challenges of the work.

So bringing the thought together, I feel it is the journey to certification that will help you do well. I use certification as a designated learning path. If you look on Oracle'S site for the specifics each level of the SC* badges, you should see some recommended classes. This should aid with the topics and you can just determine if classroom, books, mentor or hands on coding and experimentation is the right learning method for you.

So to answer your final question, I would not focus on the test and what it takes to pass it in this process but rather comprehension and practical application of all the theory so you can recognize the patterns. The test itself then becomes easier.

Good luck!
