Blackberry Curve 8330 without a SIM?

Hi there,

I bought in the US at the Airport a Blackberry Curve 8330 without any contract but with a Package from Boostmobile to active later the phone. The phone has no contract or monthly plan etc. and is not activated yet for Boostmobile.

I planed to use the phone actually later outside the USA and Jailbreak the phone for that reason.

How ever i was surprised because the Phone DOES NOT HAVE ANY SIM! I double, trible checked the phone is without a SIM Card. I expact the phone is for CDMA networks only (i read this somewhere) and i would need a CDMA provider i guess.

The question is how can i use this kind of phone for any other provider? How a phone provider works with this phone without a SIM, how hey connect this to them?

Does it make sense or even exist a way to jailbreak a phone like this to use with other provider? as I said i wonder how i would even register the phone with another provider since i cant switch SIM cards.

Would be nice if somebody can help me out here and explain a little bit better what I can do and what i hold here in the hands actually. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

what? - in the UK we can buy 'unlocked' phones without Sims cards.
you just need to get a Sim card from the provider you want to use and stick it in the blackberry.
in the UK providers offer sim cards wither on contract or pay as you go. get a sim install and use.

Hi,

I guess i did not explain it well. I know how this works normally the problem is that the phone HAS NO PLACE TO PUT A SIM! The phone works without any SIM card. I opened the phone (backs behind the battery) and there is just a memory card but no place anywhere for a SIM. So i ask myself how can i use this phone with any provider if there is no possibility to put a SIM.

As i read in internet it seems that Phones without SIM are CDMA (nextel, boostmobile etc.) providers. So i dont know if i can still jailbreak such a phone and use with my own country provider instead of the USA provider.

it is designed for wireless connection mainly - EV DO capable CDMA, so there should be many hotspots/nodes available thru Boostmobile.  I heard some of these types of phones have a SIM slot for GSM connectivity to use overseas, so you can use phone and SMS.

its possible this handset is for use in the US only, unless Boostmobile can shed any light -- do you tell the sales rep you may be taking it overseas??

Hi lainNIX,

This is 100% the phone i bought from boost-mobile. I did not think in this moment about the possibility that the phone has no SIM card at all so i did not ask. I even would use the normal USA boost-mobile would they offer any kind of rooming international (which they don't).

Unfortunately it looks like i bought a phone which i cant use. I guess i am going to sell it. It is brand new, never used a second and not even activated. I paid US$199,00 for it. If somebody has interests let me know i send anywhere in the USA.

If nobody else has any idea....??? I thought i could somehow convert it in a Nextel Phone in Brasil?

maybe the memory card slot you found  is really a micro SIM card like the iPhone 4 ?

Unfortunately not. I checked, the place if filled with a 1GB MicroSD card. Now doubt this phone has no SIM. It is the following offer: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Boost+Mobile+-+BlackBerry+Curve+8330+No-Contract+Mobile+Phone+-+Titanium/9701831.p?id=1218153003073&skuId=9701831

The question is if there is a way to get a CDMA Phone work with different provider?

don't think you can flash the firmware easily, as it will be coded/locked to a certain access provider (Boostmobile), you need to contact them and ask if it will work in Brazil.

you can get the latest v5.0 firmware for the 8330 from the carrier's page on the Blackberry website - https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/browseSoftware.do;jsessionid=A528F1A479CAA2A537F90A95300FDED3.node1

its the only blackberry mobile listed for Boostmobile.

Hi lainNIX,

The most disturbing thing is that on the Box was written "NO CONTRACT" phone! for that reason i bought it anyway because i figured no contract means free to us with any provider i like. I did not see neighter get the information that the phone is CDMA (Nextel and Boostmobile) eighter that i can use it only with Boostmobile. This is almost false propaganda in my eyes.

The boostmobile site only offers support for boostmobile registered clients but since i did not activate the phone yet i am not even client from them. I think it makes best sense to just forget the phone and sell it to someone in the usa.

if you can speak to customer support @ Boost and just ask them the hypothetical question, if you were to buy a Boostmobile CDMA handset, could you use it on Nextel Brazil network when you travel abroad, they should be able to confirm if it will be possible.

either that, or ask to get your money back, 30 day return rights or statutory rights, which ever works.

The Curve 8330 is a CDMA/EVDO only device, not a world edition (dual band CDMA/GSM)

There are a handful of carriers using CDMA, (Bell Canada, Verizon,Boostmobile etc.)

Some of their phones are Dual band, so that you can put a SIM card in and use them while traveling, however, most like this curve 8330 are not.

Thanks to all tips so far. Boost does not offer international rooming (except some country's like Mexico and Panama) which does not help me. I figured out that I could flash the 8330 to Nextel Brasil (would i have the code) but i did not find anybody who can help me with this.

I also cant give it back since i am already in Brazil and don't have the original package anymore.

I guess I stuck with it and use it as toy unlike somebody would like to have it. I paid US$199,00 for US$100,00 somebody can have it. (phone is brand new, never used and not even activated yet)

thanks to all,
Oliver

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=3F998E713A6E02287C374FD26835D87E - according to the Nextel Brasil link, they only support the 8350 and the older 7000 series.
