Bottom border of web page in middle of page

Posted on 2010-08-26
Last Modified: 2013-11-09
I purchased a web site from the web which I have modified to my needs but the bottom border of the site, which is about 40px high and extends to the limits of the screen left and right, appears around the middle of the web page.  I am using IE8 to test.

Obviously, since I purchased the web site, I am not very familiar with html.  I am using Expression Web version 1 running on Vista Business.

Attached is one web page's code and the Style.css sheet.  There is also a Layout.css but it has only one reference to the footer and that is its height of 42px so I didn't attach it.

This whole thing has been frustrating but I don't even know where to look for the solution to this.  I hope you can help.

Do you have a live version of this page I could look at? I made my own files but it uses a bunch of images that wern't included which makes it a little harder to debug. Alternatively if you could attach all the images and the js that would help.

are you talking about the black bar near the top that is behind those 4 images? That isn't the footer if that is what you are refering to.

Hi Snarfles,

Yes that's the bar I'm referring to.  I didn't notice your reply because it is above the images I sent.

it's because of the code

      background: #f5f5f5 url(images/footer_bg.jpg) repeat-x bottom center;
      text-align: right;

in style.css file.

remove this part.. at the end of the page if u want black border then put a table or div there and set this background image there..

When I view the web page locally on my IE8 it looks like it is in the right place - why is it wrong on the Internet?

OK, that worked but the div is only as wide as the web page for all except one page where it is the full width of the screen.  It's looking pretty close now.  I prefer the screen wide dark bar at the bottom of the page.

I believe that one of my probems may be that I change each page rather than the style sheet.

If you want the footer to span across the whole width of the screen then you need to take it out of the 'main' container. This has a set width so all elements within it will be that width. Just move the footer out of that and into the div with class 'bg'

so that your structure looks like so

<div class="bg">
<div id="main"></div>
<div id="footer"></div>
