groupwise notification

does groupwise hae a feature where if i send an email outside my firm, i can get a notification that the other party received it or opened it. i know within the firm, i can can get a notification when the person opens it.

Yes and no.  By default, GroupWise uses ESMTP (Extended SMTP).  This means is supports Delivery Status Notification among other things.  It is enabled by default on the GWIA.

In the client, however, you must turn this on by going to Tools > Options> Send > Mail and selecting the two check boxes near the bottom of the screen about Internet delivery and deliver status notifications to my mailbox.

Now what this does:  IF the receiving system supports DSN and its turned on, the sender will get a "message was delivered to the recipient" blah, blah.  This proves that the GWIA, contacted, delivered the message to the receiving system and then received a DSN back saying it was delivered.

Unless I specifically ask for a Return Receipt before I send a message, I won't get anything back about opened.
