do you know a good book on raid and unix, ::I am a bit confused because for one if its a software type of raid , freebsd has linux emulation so i thought that it would work:: but then again I have a server at work which was already setup with a raid card by HighPoint(Rocket Raid)::this seems to boot up BEFORE the os system...?

This contains quite a bunch of links - maybe you can find what you need.

RAID is one particular edge of technology. It is same for Linux, OSX or Windows.
If you are really into learning UNIX i would suggest to have a book like:
http://www.admin.com/
And some system in virtual machine like OpenBSD or Debian Or Gentoo (yes yes yes - a torture when installing)
