Sharepoint 2007 site template

hi guys,

I'm creating a site template which will be used to create sites for IT Projects.  The template will contain a number of custom fields and some document libraries.

I've created a site template, and I can create new sites based on this template.  What I'm trying to do now is customize the default page using a page content type.  I need to show some custom fields on the page when a new site is created - such as Project Manager, Project Scope etc.

I've created a Page Content Type containing my custom fields and an associated page layout .  I can create new pages based on this content type, which works well.

Now I basically need to combine these two to create a site template, which I can create new sites from, and have my custom page layout as the home page on the new site.

hope this makes sense..
cheers

Figured it out.. all I needed to do was go to Site Settings -> Look and Feel, and set my new aspx page as the "Welcome Page" on my site template..
I was trying to do this using 'set homepage' in SP designer but it would not allow me for this page..
that's what i suggested.  welcome page = home page.  why is this being deleted?
thought i had accepted your solution.. should be fixed now.  thanks
