I am using Magento 1.4.1.1.

All the email configuration in system-configuration has been configured to valid emails.

However, when customer put order on the website, magento said email was sent, but in fact it never did. the "contact us"  on website also show "Unable to submit your request. Please, try again later".  I try to enter gmail, yahoo email in the magento admin, none of them work...

thank you for your help.

1. Where is your site hosted?
2. What OS is it running on?
3. Is the site live? IF so what is the address?

my site is host on crucialwebhost, it is dedicated to Magento.

My site is live, it is URL is: www.ChinaDist.com

This is the 3rd Magento websites I implemented, first time had the email problem. I am wondering what will be the step to do troubleshooting? I have no clue where goes wrong.

Thanks,
Daniel

Here is what I would do:

Easiest  way to test this is using  the contact form.

1. open the contact form controller. /app/code/mage/contacts/controllers/indexcontroller.php
2. the postAction function is the action that send the email. try to debug it from there. See if any of the validation if statements fail. then see if the error is from the emails send method.
Just keep back tracking till you get a real error message.

I am not a "technical guy " ... except for debug...is there any less technical ways to try it?
