You can replace the image /_layouts/images/edititem.gif with your own version
(file location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\TEMPLATE\IMAGES)

ASKER

I do not see that directory under sharepoint developer
This should be done on (each of) the webserver(s) where SharePoint is installed.
Don't use SharePoint designer for this. Just use the file explorer and replace the image which your version.
1. Rename original edititem.gif to e.g. edititem.gif.old
2. Copy your image file (should be a gif!) to the location I mentioned earlier
3. Rename your gif-file to edititem.gif
It should be done.
okay so can't be sharepoint by sharepoint has to be all or nothing
