Zipcode Proximity for Events? Presently using EventList - A tough one for the experts

While there is a google maps plugin, there is no search component for finding venues in a specific zip code.

Hey there slatton thank you. Is that a particular Google plugin to hook into EventList?

Do you know if there is there a way to get it to show the "get directions" part that usually go with the Google Map?

Hello slatton and thank you! BTW  before I close this and thankfully send points your way , I had found an old solution on the web , complete with a module to use the Sobi2 plugin which connects with the Eventlist module, but for some reason I think there is a minor quirk in their php mysql code from what I read on the webpage in which I saw it from. I am no php expert but thought maybe some one might be.

The advantage of the sobi2 pulgin is that it natively gives you a zipcode search which ties in with hte eventlist zipcode entries so that one can search by zipcode which would really be a very close second best for what I am trying to accomplish.

Hey again slatton.
Odd thing , I am not getting the map icon instead getting a icon of a pair of footprints.
How do I get the map image instead, would you know?

Find this picture: /components/com_eventlist/assets/images/mapsicon.png.  Open it up in Fireworks or Photoshop and change it to whatever you like.  I took a screen shot of Google Maps and cut out the balloon in a 100 x 75 square and overwrote the footsteps icon.

• Copy, and
  
• save it with the same name, then
  
• upload it over the footprints pic onto the server using Dreamweaver or Filezilla.

Something to keep in mind:  Many components for Joomla are old and written for older versions of 1.5 and don't have any support with them.  Try only to use new and updated extensions to keep your site glitch free.  And avoid Legacy components.  We are on the 20th version of 1.5 and the Joomla developers are close to completing 1.6.  Legacy components will just create headaches for you down the road.  Sometimes that means buying a component, but most of them aren't that expensive, so the risk is minimal.  If you're willing to pay a couple of bucks, it opens your options up.

My bad. I thought that the icons were generated dynamically. ( wishful thinking ) and that I was doing something wrong.
