Hi,

Any guys running R71, or can confirm the latest stable version.  Need advice should I run R70 or R71 with the latest HFA.  I don't intend to use the SSL Vpn which believe is the only difference between R70 and R71

Hi,

There are a few bits and pieces besides just the SSL VPN blade - below is the "whats new" list for R71 - if none of these are relevant then you can stay with R70.

HTH

What's new in R71

Check Point R71 is based on the Software Blades Architecture.

Data Loss Prevention Software Blade

    * Check Point Revolutionizes the DLP Market by moving from Detection to Prevention of Data Loss Incidents

o Prevents data loss of critical business information
o Combines technology and processes to make DLP work
o Easy deployment for immediate data loss prevention

SSL VPN Software Blade

    * New integrated SSL VPN Software Blade secures remote workers anywhere, while delivering flexible, easy-to-use and layered protection

o Lower the cost and complexity of managing remote access by simply adding the SSL VPN blade to your existing Check Point gateway
o Increase productivity with easy Web-based remote access
o Raise network and remote endpoint security levels with multi-layered protection allowing services such as IPS and Anti-Virus for remote access connections

Raising the bar on UTM-1 Appliances and UTM Features Performance

    * UTM-1 appliances provide enhanced Firewall and IPS performance featuring patented SecureXL Technology available at no extra cost:

o Up to 4 times Firewall Throughput improvement
o Up to 3 times IPS Throughput improvement
o Up to 4 times connection/sec rate improvement

    * New Streaming architecture available with Anti-Virus and URL Filtering Software Blades provides performance boost for UTM features:

o Up to 15 times Anti-Virus Throughput improvement
o Up to 80 times Anti-Virus and URL Filtering connection capacity improvement

IPS Manageability

    * IPS-1 Sensors can now be managed from SmartCenter / Provider-1
    * Update IPS Protections automatically according to a pre-defined schedule

Management Enhancements

    * Various improvement in the Management Blades deployment (e.g. ability to install Management Server on Windows with DHCP), Usability Enhancements and new features (such as Firewall Rule Expiration)

IPSec VPN Enhancements

    * Continuing Check Point leadership in Enterprise class VPN solutions, this release include multiple enhancements important for large network configurations and for customers interested in new VPN standards (such as IKEv2).

Ok I will going with the standard software blades that comes as part of R70, The appliance will be a new Checkpoint IP695 which comes with R70 pre-installed.  I will be using the device as a firewall, vpn and IPS

IS the IPS Managebility not also in R70

IPS Manageability

    * IPS-1 Sensors can now be managed from SmartCenter / Provider-1
    * Update IPS Protections automatically according to a pre-defined schedule

Is there any advantages on throughput for Provider-1

All the above is new in R71 therefore IPS manageability is not in R70 unless they have put it in an HFA - I have not seen this however in release notes for any of them.

No advantages on Provider-1 throughput.

R71 with the latest HFA will be as stable as R70 with HFA_40.
