OK, I am really confused. I have a farm that is mixed with 32 and 64 bit versions of windows 2003. I have PS 4.5 HRP5 installed on all of them. On a test farm I have PS 4.5 HRP6 installed. on the prod farm my Framework version says 4.5.6 and on the test farm 4.5.7. BUT when I try to install XA 5 FP2 on my test farm, it tells me I already have HRP5 installed. So here is my dillema: (on top of that confusing XenApp5 FP2 wont install on a 4.5 HRP6 server stating that its already at HRP5..umm yeah it still SAYS Presntation server 4.5 in add/remove programs!!)

OK, so say I bring my current prod farm up to HRP6. And I introdusce some 2008x64 servers..Citrix has no software called Presentation Server 4.5 for windows 2008. So I have NO choice but to put XenApp5 FP2 on the new 2008 servers and I do not doubt that the product version will say XenApp 5 in the AMC..will my farm freak out because Im running essentially two different versions of XenApp..4.5 HRP6 and XA 5 FP2??? Im really going nutso over this..is 4.5 HRP6 and XA5 FP2 the same?? except for the "new" management console that can be installed on 4.5 which rebrands it XenApp...Ugh I want tp punch Citrix Marketing in the face..

I think a lot of people want to punch Citrix Marketing in the face.

XenApp 5 Feature Pack 2 is now integrated into the ISO image.  If you download the new ISO, XA50_FP2_WS03_EN.iso, you will install all the core XenApp stuff plus the FP2 goodies.  You can unselect the HRP5 install.

Personally, I would be running 4 Farms: 2003 x86, 2003 x64, 2008 x64, test.  That is what Citrix does internally and what a lot of companies do.  By running different versions on one data store, you run the risk of corrupting and destroying the data store.

IMHO, XenApp 5 on Server 2008 is the ugly red-headed step-child of the XenApp product family.  XA5FP2/2008 will still say AMC and not DSC.

I recently learned that not only does citrix version apply to "mixed mode" OS version does also. Which is a tad scary bc I've been running my 4.5 farm w 2k3 32 and 64 bit servers for over two years with no apparent problems. But, there could be some evil monster waiting to bite me where the sun doesn't shine because if it. It's difficult to move the servers into separate farms at this time bc they're all prod and were a 24/7 kinda place..people like to know the hospital is always open..downtime doesn't seem to be in the higher-ups vocabulary.

Anyway, I'll make an effort to try and phase into separate farms as new hardware comes my way. Plus, I also just read the same license server can serve multiple farms BUT is that still the truth with multiple farms/different citrix versions..of course all are at enterprise level?

If so, that would really ease my mind and help me to make solid plans to create a new farm for my 2008 servers and try to shuffle the others around as best I can.

Thanks for your help!

A Citrix icense Server can server multiple farms running multiple OSes and different directory services (i.e. Active Directory and eDirectory).  The license server only cares about the request for licenses, not where the requests come from.
