Wordpress category archive showing subcategory

I have several parent categories with child categories/subcategories. The parent category has no posts.

The issues is this: The parent category archive page is identical to the first child subcategory archive page—it shows all the subcategory posts in the same way that the subcategory archive page does.

Is this normal? The posts in the child category are only in the child category, i.e. I have NOT added the parent category as a category to the child posts.

1. So another way would be to switch everything to tags instead, and use tag archive pages?

2. What advantages of child categories would I lose by doing that?
- Widgets would not be able to show child categories beneath parent categories
- The archive page would have a similar loss of display
Anything else lost of any significance?

3. Tags don't have a similar display issue of any kind, right?

Depends what the goal is, so for example if you were doing a car yard site, you might want all the sub categories to be listed in the parent one.

Tags are probably a good solution for what you want to do, you can customise the tag template too i think.

You could also do both, have tags named same or similar as categories. So you could use a mixture of both which is what i tend to do.

The seo of the post is perhaps not quite as thorough if you dont have the child parent relationship but i can't think of any obvious disadvantage other than that tags are all individual, there is no hierarchy to them.

eg. tag page: http://www.newcastleoutrigger.com.au/tag/outrigger-canoeing/
and then category page: http://www.newcastleoutrigger.com.au/category/club-news/
