Wordpress category archive showing subcategory
I have several parent categories with child categories/subcategories. The parent category has no posts.
The issues is this: The parent category archive page is identical to the first child subcategory archive page—it shows all the subcategory posts in the same way that the subcategory archive page does.
Is this normal? The posts in the child category are only in the child category, i.e. I have NOT added the parent category as a category to the child posts.

2. What advantages of child categories would I lose by doing that?
- Widgets would not be able to show child categories beneath parent categories
- The archive page would have a similar loss of display
Anything else lost of any significance?
3. Tags don't have a similar display issue of any kind, right?
