Windows Mail to Outlook 2010

Experts,

I need to transfer/convert Windows Mail folders to Outlook 2010 client on a new computer.

Problem:

Clients old computer running XP and uses Outlook Express as an email client. New computer running win 7 with Outlook 2010.

The old XP computer will not allow me to use the Export the mail messages from Outlook Express to Outlook format with error in MAPI. Therefore, I copied all of the folders from the XP PC to the new Win 7 PC to be associated in Windows Mail thinking that I could avoid problem shooting the old PC and export them from their into Outlook on the new PC.

I installed Outlook 2010 on the new PC. default "outlook" profile and setup email. All is well.
Now, to get the messages imported, I opened Windows Mail and imported the files and folders from the OLD XP PC. Thinking this would allow me to export folders into a PST to be opened by outlook. However, when I go to File | Export | Messages | choose Exchange format (outlook) it works and finishes successfully.

Per Microsofts instructions I move to Outlook 2010> File>Open> Import> and choose the outlook express format. The import process starts but only gets Contacts, no folders or messages. I see the folders in Windows Mail.

What am I doing wron in making this process move the folders from Windows Mail to the new Outlook client on the new Windows 7 PC (now both on the same machine)?

Thanks

Perhaps try installing outlook 2010 directly onto the old machine as the trial (no activation required), then import directly from outlook express into outlook 2010, then moving the PST to the new PC?

truromeoforjuliet,

Thanks for the response.

Good idea, but 2 chllanges in making that happen.
1) No media. The Office suite was purchased through Dell who shipped an activation license. The Box PC came with a link to get the software which was streamed to the NEW PC over the Internet.

2)The OLD PC keeps failing when choosing export to Exchange format.
You said you're able to see the folders in Windows Mail, but Windows 7 doesn't come with a mail client. Where exactly are these folders listed? Windows Live Mail?

Windows Live Mail is where the folders are visable, sorry. I did not realize there was a difference.

Sorry for the delay, but I am away from the computer. Once I return I will attempt the solution you have proposed.

Thanks!

From the link/instruction you posted above, I have completed the step referenced below. As mentioned in m previous post, this is where I see the wizard complete succesfully. However, when I look in Outlook 2010, the folders/email are not visible in the Outlook client.

"install Windows Live Mail on the new computer and move the OE dbx files to the new computer, then export to Outlook. "

Unfortunately, I do not have the physical PC to attempt the installation operation of converting the folders.

I appreciate your help. Since the current OS and Outlook Express installation was corrupted, the best solution was to upgrade to Office on another computer after first importing the files into Outlook Express.

Thanks.

Glad you at least got it working, albeit through a more tedious method. Such is the life of troubleshooting. Cheers - Mark
