NOTE - I know there's a lot on the web about this, but I believe I've already tried all the relevant fixes I found out there.

On my Creative Zen Vision M 30GB player (model number dvp-hd0003, serial number: mapf1690630001559e), on both a Windows 7 and a separate Vista computer, I cannot load new firmware on the zen because "creative zen vision m firmware update" says "device not detected". Creative Media Explorer installer says the same.

Because no firmware is installed, it only goes into recovery mode. When I plug it into the USB cable, the zen says "docked", and the zen's windows explorer window says "50mb of 50mb free". Device Manager says the driver is installed fine (as "Creative Zen Vision:M" under "Portable Devices")

I HAVE tried using the Recovery Mode options of: clean up, format all, and reload firmware. They did not help.  I cannot get the firmware on.

I tried going into dev mgr and uninstalling the driver, but it just reinstalled. Same prob.

NOTE - FYI earlier today it was working relatively well, with just a minor problem transferring certain WMA files with Overdrive Media Console. So in hopes of fixing that I removed the Zen's firmware in order to reinstall it, but now I cannot.

All I can think of is to remove any folders for the Creative Zen Vision  and regestry key
any files in the temp folder so that the next time you plug it in Windows will find new hardware
Or use the add remove hardware in control panel and uninstall it all
reboot.
then plug in the Zen then go to add new hardware and use the setup disc provided

Thx, merete, I tried what you said, with no luck. I had some back and forth with creative and they ultimately said it was bricked.  So I bought a new one.

In case anyone else has this problem in the future:
After hearing all the details, Creative sent me the "Mp3 PLayer Recovery Tool", which I thought might work because it in fact DID "detect" the player. However, then it just downloaded and executed the very same firmware program I had tried before, so I ended up getting the same error message, saying the firmware updater could not detect the player.
