do you mean modifying the email reading pane when replying?

ASKER

thanks,
i mean when viewing an email from the inbox
yes you can right-click on the ribbon itself (the blank section where you have your other buttons and select customize view for 2003 or customize ribbon for 2007/2010. there you can add and remove the buttons you want or don't need. for smileys and the likes you most likely will have to download and third party application or check the micorosft office site for add-ins.
