I have a client running an older server with SBS server 2003 standard.  They need SQL server 2008 for a software upgrade, and I was wondering if Small Business Server version would give us any issues?

Nope, SBS is Full server 2003 with full Exchange 2003 with just a few software restrictions. It will work perfectly :)
