Use of Outlook Calendar in a ASP.NET Application (Client Side)

Hello,

We have an ASP.NET Web Application (.NET 2.0) running on IIS 6.0.
1. The web application allows recording the booking of the building / room. When the customer submits the request we would like to check if in his outlook calendar there is no booking yet. If so, we would like to  inform him about the conflict.
2. Same option but based on the building / room, on his outlook profile more than one calendar is available. In fact, one calendar per location.
In summary, if the customer wants to book the Gym Center the first of October from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, the web site will check locally if on his outlook profile there is a calendar called Gym Center, will check the date and time and will return and message in case of conflict.
Our first findings show that ActiveX could be a solution but for security reason we can't use it.

Thanks a lot for your help.

WEBDAV is perhaps a good option but only when you are using something like exchange and you can access/modify the user's calendar on the Exchange Server. This is however a server side solution.

You indicate here "Client Side" and if by this you mean that you want to be able to check any arbitrary user's local Outlook calendar when the users browses your site, I am doubtful that you will be able to do this. e.g. if i browse your site right now, from down here in the middle of nowhere, over the internet... you actaully want to be able to check my Outlook calender. You may still need to resort to ActiveX but there are perhaps other issues to consider.. e.g. Outlook security.

See this article which attempts to do this on the client side using javascript: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/office/OutlookDemo.aspx
NOTE that this might only work in IE, which supports ActiveX (after configuration).
