prism3d engine error

 My sons game started coming up with an error of prism3d engine error when playing, then quits program. anyone heard of this before?? The game was downloaded so I dont have a disk on hand....

Prism3D is the graphics engine that SCS use to render the Wheels of Steel game.  It's getting quite old now and has trouble dealing with some modern hardware and software combinations.
It needs your graphics drivers to support OpenGL
Generic Microsoft drivers don't usually do this and you should install the latest graphics drivers for your system from the manufacturer.
Also depends if this is the paid for download from SCS or their demo as you can't patch the demo.  There are at least half a dozen different games under the 18WoS title - the patches for each can be downloaded from here
 
After that really need details of:
- which version of  the18WoS game this is?
- where it was downloaded from?
- what version it is patched to?
and
- which verson of Windows you are trying to run it on?

Thanks for the explaination, I will try to get the patches. We are running windows xp home and it is a paid download
