VS 2008 Design Mode not working with Master Page

I have been using Visual Studio 2008 for some time but have never used the Master Page functionality.   When building standard web forms I can switch to Deisgn mode and drag and drop controls onto the page...no problem there.
The issue I am having now is that I created a very basic master page and a content page. The master page simply has an image header with a single content placeholder.  I then created a content page that referecnes the master page and have some text displaying in the content palceholder.   I can call up the content page fine and it pulls in the master page and looks great.  Everything is good up till this point.
ok, now I want to add a gridview to the content page.  I bring up the content page in VS and click the Design tab to go into design mode so I can drag and drop and gridview control.   When I click the Design tab I see a brief message saying loading master page.  I then see the page with the header on the master page but I dont see text from the content page at all and I cannot edit the page at all.  The window is greyed out and I cant drag any controls onto it.  its almiost like it is locked from editing.  I can switch back to the source window and add controls there and see them when I load the page....but still nothing in design mode.  why?  Thanks

Was able to get this resolved myself...
Issue was that on the master page I was using an asp:table around the placeholder.  because the table was set to runat=server it was not generating in design mode.   I changed it to a standard html table and it works just great!
