Assuming you're using eDirectory, the GWIM name is created from the Given and Last names or a GWIM attribute you'll likely find on the Other tab of a given user.  I'd suggest using ConsoleOne with the Messenger snapins installed.  Find a user you want to change, open the properties and try changing the given name (first name), click Apply and then logout and login to GWIM and see if your GWIM shows the different screen name.  If it doesn't, look on the Other tab and see if you can see a GWIM name.
