User Profile Synchronization Error MOSS MA not found

I get this error when I am configuring a sync connection to AD. Any ideas? I am working on a Sharepoint upgrade this weekend. I see errors in the event view saying the the FIM can't connect to the SQL server.

I got user synch to work after a few restarts of the user profile service and FIM services. I have an enterprise setup, with 6 servers serving various roles in the farm. I have one SQL server, which is clustered. All databases live there. I was seeing errors that the FIM wasn't able to connect to its database. The odd thing is that the account that it was connecting with is an SA on the box. Strange. I am going to monitor over night and see if I see those errors again. I fond the link below which descibes most of the errors I was seeing. I do use a proxy server as the user describes and do not allow any traffic out to the internet. Internally I am not filtering any ports.

1) Events with warning / errors
2) Your Infrastructure (MOSS, DB, AD...etc)

is the user profile sync service started?  do you see the user profile related db's on the sql server?  

also, user profile sync's only work with a farm install (not basic).

I monitored this all week and the errors have went away.
