VT100 emulation, stuck trying to setup a dell powerconnect 5448

A Dell PowerConnect just landed on my desk, and to fire it up i need to go in via VT100 terminal device.

This I have never done.

I have a laptop running windows 7 and the serial cable connected, but how do i move forward?

Have you tried using Putty and setting it to "Serial"?
