cicso rv042 setup issue

Hi, i am trying to configure the rv042 vpn connection.

Current setups are
Home pc, wireless optus usb stick, aswell as dlink dsl 2740b router modem.. have tried both.

Office connection is modem is a wag120n wireless adsl modem, connected using the wan port to the cicso rv042 vpn router.

under security / vpn passthrough all are enabled.

I have tried several tunnels and settings using rv042 but cannot even get to a stage of verifying username and password.

I am using the cisco vpn client software off there website.

What i need to achieve is to get 4 onsite staff members access to the server at the same time. Does not matter what type of connection is done eg pptp or ipsec.

Would anyone have any suggestions or tutorials for me to look at. Cisco website doesnt seem to tell me much.

For the QuickVPN client, you need a certificate you get from the router itself to install in the client software. Did you do that?

If you cannot get the QuickVPN client to work, take a look at the Shrew VPN client. It is free.

A really excellent VPN client is the NCP Secure Entry (www.ncp-e.com). I use this one, but it is not free (just really good). .... Thinkpads_User

i have just downloaded and am looking for how to get the certificate. one other question though, do i have to specify the port in the connection to the router. The router doesnt seem to let me choose what port to use.

The shrew vpn requires a cert too so i will research on how to get that and come back to you

You should not have to specify the port if you set up the VPN connection via the setup screen. I have an RV042 at home and RV0xx machines at a client, and it is not necessary to specify a port. VPN will do that automatically.

ok sweet, i have just downloaded the certificate to my computer, i can rdc to the server no problem and emailed it to me. Would you know what to do know, how do i install it on this computer.

For Shrew, I don't know, but there probably is a setup for it. For QuickVPN, it is part of the profile setup, so I expect it is similar for Shrew. There is a spot for certificates in NCP, so just look around.

i have imported the certificate into both programs and tried. The cicso vpn stays on connecting for ages then comes up saying cannot connect.

The shew gives me an error
bringing up tunnel
negotiation timeout occured
tunnel disabled
detached from key daemon

would you know of a guide for me to read to correctly setup the router. some say to use tunnel and others say to use group vpn.

even a guide to use pptp - is this much easier to setup?

Open your RV042 setup page (need to log in) and go to the VPN tab. Set up a client to site VPN tunnel. Go through all the settings including Advanced, and then mirror these settings in the Shrew client.

I have gone through all the settings. i have left all the settings as default.
im still getting the same message. would you know a step by step guide cause im obviously doing something wrong. Both programs are giving me the same message as before

First, if you are new to VPN, it is complicated, so you may need to get some on site assistance. That is what I do.

Having said that, look here:

it still didnt resolve the issue after following step by step guide. Must be other issues involved
