Problems installing SQL server 2008

Hi,

During installation I run into errors.
SQL Server 2008 was already installed, but was removed.
Re-installtion of it gives my a headache.

The installtion goes wrong when processing:
SQLEngineDBStartConfigAction_install_configrc_Cpu32

Error:
Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server error log for potential causes.

Any suggestion on how to cleanup the old installation?
By the way, SQL Server 2005 is installed too on that machine, which may not be removed and must remain in tact.

Or how to remove an old installation of SQL Server 2008 R2 completely without messing up a sQL server 2005 installation on the same computer?

Try removing from Add/Remove programs which should ideally remove SQL Server 2008 R2 only.
If that didn't help, then try out the approach listed below:
