I have been kicking around starting my own business as a Graphic and Web designer. Actually I am all for it, I just need a few more clients to pull it off. Recently I was propositioned by a local WP design company who also hosts. She said they were getting into other things and the hosting wasn't worth it any more. She warned me there is no money in it, but I am hard headed.

PART 1:
I am going to attempt to make it work, and I was wondering if anyone has any Personal or know first had which Hosting company would be best. I will be hosting 15-20 Business Sites not blogs. Any suggestions would be great.

PART 2:
P.S. I have been thinking about Host Gator, but one of my recent clients has just signed up with another and would like to transfer more to the same company. It is a Dell server, is there any complications moving away from a Linux Server?

I mainly build Joomla sites, but I have used many hosting companies. I find that Hostgator has offered me the best features and services.

I found Hostgator is superior to:  1and1, Godaddy Hosting, Network Solutions, Web.com hosting -- all of which I ahve used..

Hostgator has great technical support, a great control panel (Cpanel) with many features.   Much easier to navigate and more features than Godaddy hosting, and Network Solutions hosting. I found  1and1's admin panel was particularly convoluted and unfriendly.

Hostgator has several plans.  I have used their basic plans, as well as their reseller platform which includes a Web Host Manager which makes it very easy to add domains etc.

Yeah,I have been leaning towered HostGator. Do you know anything about using Dell servers Vs Linux. I might have to switch a site for a client, and I'm not sure if I can get him do join my server hosting. He is on aLinux server and has joined a hosting company that runs Dell, do you know if anything has to be done for the switch?

Understanding Web Applications

Without even knowing it, most of us are using web applications on a daily basis. Gmail and Yahoo email, Twitter, Facebook, and eBay are used by most of us daily—and they are web applications. We often confuse these web applications tools for websites.  So, what is the difference?

No, Hopefully they are. I will call the and check. I was hoping to find some good info to show him why he should switch (because the Dell server). I tried a few Google searches, but I was unable to find good info on the subject. That seems to happen more often since they have "improved" their search results.

Thanks for the input. I was hoping for a few more opinions, but from what I have learned by comparing, hostGator seems to be the best choice.

If you know of any good links or stats comparing Windows and Linux it would be useful. Again, thanks for the input.

Hi I don't know of any good links comparing windows and Linux, however you should do a search on how well Wordpress works on Windows.   Check the Wordpresss forums and see if anyone has issues with Wordpress on windows.

Wordpress is written in php, which lives best in a Linux environment.

I think windows can be set up to run php, but am not certain.  And even if it could run in WIndows, I would think you would get best tech support from a company that specializes in linux

If you will mainly be doing Wordpress other php-based systems, then you really should be using a hosting company that is well experienced in Linux.

Personally there is nothing magic about the Dell brand when it comes to hosting.

Thanks, that confirms what I was thinking. If the client insists on the hosting company with the Dell server, I guess he will just have to pay me to Iron the problems out.
