Extend A Partition During Production Hours

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with a 700 GB NTFS partition on a basic disk.  I have another 800 GB of unallocated space on the same disk.

I need to extend the 700 GB partition to include the 800 GB.  Am I able to extend the partition while users are connected to the file shares on same partition?

Yes I have done this before :)

I used to use a free utility by Dell called extpart to do it (i wrote a guide for doing it inside virtual machines but it applies to physical boxes as well). You can find it here:

From what I remember you can resize a disk in Server 2008 without extpart anyway :)

There are lot of toots avaialbe on internet which will help you to resize the partition without reboot one of them is listed below:
http://www.partition-tool.com/easeus-partition-manager/extend-ntfs-system-partit ion-without-reboot.htm

As per Microsoft it is not recemmonded to resize the partition wihtout reboot.
