is it  possible to ping the FTP server? I just have the ftp address & authentication, and want to see if it is 'alive'- that way I know if the connection problem is on my side or the other.

thanks

HI,
try
telnet hostname 21
to check the FTP control port 21 on hostname
If it's alive you should see the greeting banner of the FTP server (if any).
Leave the connection with "quit".
If you get
telnet: connect: A remote host refused an attempted connect operation.
instead, the FTP server is not up.
