Changing the space between the text and edge of a button control

Can anybody tell me how I can access the properties of a button control so that I can alter the space between the text and the edge of the control itself?
1. We can't use Javascript   2. Setting the button to a fixed width is problematic if the text is determined at runtime (data driven).

Two options that I know of.

1. Set the top or bottom padding
2. Use an image

Neither are ideal. Option #1 can screw up the alignment with other controls. Option #2 is a pain if you need to do this on lots of different buttons with various text (or with dynamic text).

<input type="submit" value="hello world" style="height: 100px; padding-bottom: 50px;">

It seems to be working with these styles width:auto;overflow:visible

do you know if that would be problematic in the manner that I intend to use it?
